Here's another case study that leads with a spreadsheet instead of adjectives.
In late September 2025, a locally owned carpet cleaning company in Hampton Roads, Virginia added UpChat to their website. Nine and a half months later, we pulled the full lead export — 427 conversations — and looked at what actually happened.
The numbers first
- 427 visitor conversations handled by the AI agent
- 269 qualified free-estimate requests — about 28 a month, steady across three seasons
- 98% of estimate requests included a phone number or email (263 of 269)
- 38% of all leads arrived nights or weekends — 164 conversations, including 102 estimate requests
- 45 distinct service-area zip codes, each verified in chat
No new ad spend, no extra traffic. The same visitors the site was already getting — just far fewer of them wasted.
Carpet cleaning leads don't keep business hours
Carpet cleaning is a "right now" purchase. Someone's dog had an accident, guests arrive Saturday, the landlord inspection is Monday. When a homeowner lands on your site at 9pm, they're not going to wait until morning to call — they're going to keep Googling until someone answers.
The data proves it. Of the 427 conversations this company's agent handled:
- 164 (38%) started outside weekday business hours — before 8am, after 6pm, or on a weekend
- 101 (24%) came in on Saturday or Sunday
- 102 of the 269 estimate requests — nearly 4 in 10 — arrived while the office was closed
Every one of those got greeted, qualified, and captured. No voicemail, no "we'll call you back."
What the agent actually does on every lead
One thing to be clear about: the agent doesn't book jobs. It captures and qualifies — the company quotes and books through their normal process. What changes is what lands in the owner's inbox. This isn't a contact form with a chat skin; the agent runs a real qualifying conversation first:
- Scope of work. Rooms, stairs, hallways, square footage, furniture pieces — "3 rooms, 1 hallway, and 2 sets of stairs" arrives ready to quote.
- Service area check. The agent verifies the visitor's zip code against the service area on the spot. Leads came in from 45 distinct zips across Hampton Roads; out-of-area requests get filtered before they waste anyone's time.
- Contact details. 263 of 269 estimate requests (98%) included a phone number or email, collected naturally mid-conversation.
- Timing. 57% of estimate requests included a preferred date or window — "morning of August 27," "after July 22" — so the follow-up call opens with "does the 27th still work?" instead of starting from scratch.
- Job conditions. Pets, odors, and stains came up in roughly 150 conversations, which means the crew shows up with the right treatment and the quote is accurate the first time.
The owner opens each lead as a tidy summary, not a transcript, and takes it from there — quoting and booking the way they always have, just with the qualifying legwork already done.
The results, month over month
Lead flow held steady across three seasons — from a 20-estimate January to a 42-estimate March, averaging 28 qualified estimate requests per month. Oct–Dec 2025 brought 89 estimate requests; Jan–Mar 2026, 86; Apr–Jun 2026, 77 — with 17 more in the first eleven days of July.
What visitors asked about tracked the company's core services: carpet cleaning led (245 conversations), followed by pet and odor issues (85), stain removal (83), upholstery (69), and area rugs (69) — with tile & grout and commercial inquiries rounding it out. The agent handles all of it from one training pass on the company's services and service area.
What this means for local service businesses
Your website already gets the traffic. The question is what happens in the minute after someone lands — especially the 38% of minutes when you're asleep, on a job, or with your family.
An AI agent answers in that minute. It knows your services, checks your service area, asks your qualifying questions, and hands you a lead that's ready to quote. That's the whole story here: not more traffic, just far fewer wasted visitors.
